Here's what that means in practice.  An acoustic panel is only as effective as what covers it. It's a simple principle, but one that's easy to overlook when textile selection is treated as primarily a design decision. The substrate does the work of absorbing sound. But if the textile wrapped around it reflects rather than transmits, sound never reaches the substrate in the first place. The panel underperforms, and the space pays the price. ![Pictos 2-5 acoustical](https://go.duvaltex.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Pictos%202-5%20acoustical.jpeg?width=1662&height=1167&name=Pictos%202-5%20acoustical.jpeg) Reflection vs. transparency When sound waves hit a surface, one of two things happens. Either they bounce back, or they pass through to the absorptive layer beneath. With acoustic textiles, the goal is always the latter. A textile that is acoustically transparent allows sound to travel through its structure and into the substrate, where it can be absorbed. The construction of the textile determines which way it goes. Weave density, yarn type, and finishing all influence how much sound passes through versus how much is deflected back into the room. It's not a detail — it's the difference between an installation that performs and one that falls short. ![Definitive Collection Panels 1](https://go.duvaltex.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Definitive%20Collection%20Panels%201.jpg?width=8256&height=6192&name=Definitive%20Collection%20Panels%201.jpg) How Duvaltex approaches it At Duvaltex, acoustical transparency isn't assumed, it's measured. Every acoustic textile in our portfolio is individually tested across a range of frequencies, and that data is made available at the product level. Designers and manufacturers aren't specifying on assumption. They're working from documented performance. That commitment applies across our full range of acoustic textiles, from established classics to newer additions. It's part of what has made Duvaltex a trusted reference for specifiers and manufacturers for over 50 years. The Definitive Collection, a standard applied The Definitive Collection brings this approach into focus. Six styles, each individually tested and selected not only for design relevance and durability, but for consistent acoustical transparency across applications. Anchorage, FR701, Felt, Palette, Studio 54, and Whisper each meet a verified performance standard which is what makes them reliable, and what makes the collection specifiable with confidence. Choosing an acoustically transparent textile protects the integrity of the entire installation. The substrate, the engineering behind the panel, the acoustic intent of the space, all of it depends on what's wrapped around it. Getting that right at the specification stage means the finished environment performs the way it was designed to. Specified across a range of applications - Acoustic panels - Tackboards - Wall systems - Speaker - Integrated acoustic solutions This is the third in a series of three articles on the Definitive Collection. Acoustic performance looks different at every scale. Coming up: a closer look at real installations, from schools to corporate spaces, and what made them work.   [Explore the Definitive Collection](https://duvaltex.com/en-us/contract-textiles/collections/definitive-collection)   #### Follow us [Share on Twitter](https://twitter.com/share?url=https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/how-acoustical-transparency-works-and-why-it-matters-for-every-specification&text=How%20Acoustical%20Transparency%20Works,%20and%20Why%20It%20Matters%20for%20Every%20Specification) [Share on Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/how-acoustical-transparency-works-and-why-it-matters-for-every-specification&t=How%20Acoustical%20Transparency%20Works,%20and%20Why%20It%20Matters%20for%20Every%20Specification) [Share on LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?mini=true&url=https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/how-acoustical-transparency-works-and-why-it-matters-for-every-specification&t=How%20Acoustical%20Transparency%20Works,%20and%20Why%20It%20Matters%20for%20Every%20Specification) Previous story [← The Definitive Collection: One Curated Color Story](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/the-definitive-collection-one-curated-color-story) Next story [Discover Duvaltex, reimagined →](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/discover-duvaltex-reimagined) ### You May Also Like These Related Stories [Discover Duvaltex, reimagined](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/discover-duvaltex-reimagined) ![artofix-duo-crystal-lunchroom-w (1)](https://go.duvaltex.com/hs-fs/hubfs/artofix-duo-crystal-lunchroom-w%20(1).png?width=1200&height=900&name=artofix-duo-crystal-lunchroom-w%20(1).png) [News](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/tag/news) [Article](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/tag/article) #### Discover Duvaltex, reimagined Sep 14, 2026 3 minute read [How Acoustical Transparency Works, and Why It Matters for Every Specification](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/how-acoustical-transparency-works-and-why-it-matters-for-every-specification) ![DC\_269591\_v22](https://go.duvaltex.com/hs-fs/hubfs/DC_269591_v22.jpg?width=3485&height=2614&name=DC_269591_v22.jpg) [Products](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/tag/products) [News](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/tag/news) #### How Acoustical Transparency Works, and Why It Matters for Every Specification Aug 05, 2026 2 minute read [The Definitive Collection: One Curated Color Story](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/the-definitive-collection-one-curated-color-story) ![DC\_269785\_v1-1](https://go.duvaltex.com/hs-fs/hubfs/DC_269785_v1-1.jpg?width=6192&height=4644&name=DC_269785_v1-1.jpg) [Products](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/tag/products) [News](https://go.duvaltex.com/en/news-insights/tag/news) #### The Definitive Collection: One Curated Color Story Jul 02, 2026 1 minute read ### Get Email Notifications #### ![Duvaltex-logo\_noir](https://go.duvaltex.com/hubfs/Logos/Duvaltex-logo_noir.svg) #### Textile innovation partner of leading brands, we engineer, design and manufacture advanced and sustainable textiles for both the contract and personal protective equipment industries. #### ![Duvaltex-logo\_noir](https://go.duvaltex.com/hubfs/Logos/Duvaltex-logo_blanc.svg) #### Textile innovation partner of leading brands, we engineer, design and manufacture advanced and sustainable textiles for both the contract and personal protective equipment industries.
